As the flour industry evolved, so did the businesses that were a part of it. Cadwallader C. Washburn had already teamed up with John Crosby in 1877 to form the Washburn-Crosby Company, best known for their Gold Medal Flour brand. In 1928, the Washburn-Crosby Company merged with 28 other mills and was renamed General Mills.

Placer gold mining was soon joined by hard rock mining, as prospectors followed the gold to its source veins in the mountains. Gold in some upper gravel benches north of the Blue River was recovered by hydraulic mining. Gold production decreased in the late 1800s, but revived in 1908 by gold dredging operations along the Blue River and Swan River.

The Oehler mill is made of stone and it is two stories high. Inside the mill there was three run of stone. The Oehler mill was built before the "new" roller mill technology, which came to La Crosse in the 1880s. Stone ground mills could grind whole-wheat flour, grist, and cornmeal.
